Brest State Technical University (BrSTU) held a preventive awareness session focused on two critical aspects of modern life: online safety and responsible behavior on the road. The event featured guest experts from key law enforcement agencies in the Brest region - professionals who deal daily with the consequences of legal illiteracy and public carelessness.
The first part of the session was led by Alexander Vladimirovich Berezovsky, a senior inspector in the Propaganda and Public Outreach Department of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Brest Regional Executive Committee.
Alexander Vladimirovich focused on the prevention of traffic violations and road accidents. He emphasized not only the formal observance of traffic laws but also the importance of fostering a culture of mutual respect between drivers and pedestrians. He highlighted the dangers of using electronic devices while driving and reiterated the absolute prohibition against driving under the influence. He also addressed the use of personal mobility devices (such as electric scooters), which are becoming increasingly popular.
The second part of the event, dedicated to online safety, was led by Alexander Viktorovich Maksymuk, Head of the Digital Development of Preliminary Investigations Department at the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for the Brest Region. His presentation centered on a pressing and significant issue: countering cyber-fraud.
Alexander Viktorovich provided a detailed breakdown of common fraudulent schemes, stressing the extreme danger of sharing SMS verification codes, bank card details, or account credentials with strangers. A key portion of the discussion also covered the criminal liability associated with such actions. Students were reminded that participating in schemes to launder or cash out stolen funds - a practice known as "money mule" activity - carries serious legal consequences, even if done for a small reward, and can derail one’s life right at the start.
Take care of yourselves and stay safe - both in the real world and in the digital realm!
